Why I shoot most still life at 0.3 metres
At close focus the depth of field is a few millimetres. That constraint decides every picture before the light does.

Most of my still life happens at the closest distance the lens will focus. At 0.3 metres with a 100 mm macro and f/4, the sharp zone is about three millimetres deep.
Choosing the sharp edge
That sounds like a limit, but it is the most useful decision in the picture. It tells the viewer exactly where to look, and it turns everything else into tone.
The practical rule: decide the one edge that must be sharp, focus there by hand at full magnification, and only then build the light around it.
